Mayor John Lane

Who I am and What I’ve done.

Dear friends, neighbors, and fellow Republicans,

Most of you know me very well, and hopefully by now you’re well-aware of what Team Lane has accomplished over the last four years of my administration. Promises were made, and I’m proud to say, those promises were kept.

  • Design & installation of state-of-the-art PFAS water treatment system to guarantee safe drinking water in Hawthorne;

  • Upgraded vital DPW equipment;

  • Brought the Hawthorne Police Department up to full strength to increase public safety;

  • Initiated the “Mayor’s Wellness Program” to improve the health of our residents;

  • Brought early voting to Hawthorne;

  • Made 35mph Goffle Road speed limit consistent throughout the Boro;

  • Secured grants in the amount of $4,006,409.00, including most recent grant from PSE&G for a new chiller;

  • Completed 95% of planned athletic facilities upgrades;

  • Standardized speed limits on borough streets and increased enforcement;

  • Brought new businesses into the borough.

Accomplishments aside, let me tell you a little bit about myself. I’m a lifelong resident of Hawthorne, the place where Margo and I chose to raise our family.  Community service is in my DNA!

  • Since 1970 I've been an active member of the Hawthorne Fire Department, having served in all offices up to and including Assistant Chief.  In 2012, I was elected Executive Committeeman to represent Passaic County in the New Jersey State Firemen’s Association and currently serve the Association as its Executive Committee Chairman.=

  • I proudly served as a Hawthorne Board of Education trustee for eight years, during which time I developed my negotiation skills as a member of the Labor Negotiations Team, chaired the Building & Grounds Committee, and helped spearhead Hawthorne’s very first Project Graduation to ensure a safe, drug- and alcohol-free graduation night.

  • I owned an electrical contracting business in Hawthorne for 24 years where I supervised up to 20 employees on multiple commercial, industrial and residential jobs.

  • I am a 47-year member of the Hawthorne Chamber of Commerce, serving 36 of those years on the Board of Directors.  I also served three terms as President and three terms as Vice President.

  • I am a New Jersey licensed Emergency Medical Technician, and a 20-year member of the Hawthorne Ambulance Corps, giving me firsthand knowledge of the importance of   ensuring that our public safety professionals have the training and equipment needed to protect our residents.

  • Before becoming Mayor in 2022, I spent over 22 years as a Councilmen-at-Large, serving under four different administrations. Working closely with four very different management styles proves I have the ability to adapt, build bridges, and bring our community together, regardless of the challenges we face.

We have a lot of exciting initiatives underway that took vision, energy, and perseverance to bring to fruition:

  • We purchased four new fire trucks over the past seven years to protect your lives and property.

  • As a former member of our Public Works Committee, together with Councilmen Bruce Bennett and Dominic Mele, we wisely invested in a state-of-the-art brine system to treat our 45 miles of streets and roads in the winter, and built a new public works facility to house our expensive equipment and vehicles, increasing their life expectancy.

  • We restructured our police department to strengthen our traffic division, giving them the resources needed to take a fresh look at maximum speed and weight limits and install visual safety communication devices on our streets and intersections. They are also using scales to weigh and summons overloaded dump trucks and other large, heavy vehicles that damage our roadways and put our residents at risk.

  • As former chairman of the Ordinance Committee, I worked with Councilwoman Laiosa and Boswell Engineering to update our storm water management ordinance as mandated by the New Jersey Department of Environmental Protection, ensuring that large developers looking to work in Hawthorne will have to comply with our more stringent ordinance.

Hawthorne taxpayers get a lot of “bang for their buck” in terms of services and quality of life. That doesn’t happen by accident. It takes teamwork and fiscal responsibility by a Mayor and Council that can work together as one unit. That is why I am asking you to support Team Lane – Me, Bruce Bennett, Dominic Mele and Anna Marie Sasso – in the upcoming general election. We have the knowledge, experience, fortitude and drive to lead Hawthorne into the future.
